Travelers' profit, revenue and written premiums all rise, beat expectations

Travelers Companies Inc. reported Thursday third-quarter earnings, written premiums and revenue that rose above expectations. The stock was still inactive in premarket trade. The insurer said net income rose to $709 million, or $2.62 a share, from $293 million, or $1.05 a share, in the same period a year ago. Excluding non-recurring items, core earnings per share came to $2.54, above the FactSet consensus of $2.25. Total revenue rose 5% to $7.72 billion, beating the FactSet consensus of $7.55 billion, as net written premium growth of 6% to $7.06 billion topped expectations of $6.99 billion. Underlying combined ratio increased to 93.0% from 92.8%, compared with the FactSet consensus of 93.2%. Book value per share fell 3% to $84.82, due to the impact of higher interest rates on unrealized investments. The stock has lost 2.7% over the past three months, while the SPDR S&P Insurance ETF has slipped 0.9% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 2.0%.
