“Market conditions are changing. The continued rise in interest rates suggests we are in the early stages of a bond bear market, which could intensify as central banks withdraw liquidity. The receding tide of liquidity will start to reveal more rocks beyond what has been exposed in emerging markets so far, and the value of […]

In the third quarter of 2018, Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B) added several new positions to its equity portfolio. All of the companies the company added were in the financial services sector, which, as I have speculated previously, suggests Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio) is handing more power over to his investing lieutenants, primarily Todd Combs, who, before joining Berkshire Hathaway in 2010, ran a hedge fund that specialized in financial stocks. Tsunami warning goes into force after 6.7- magnitude earthquake hits Alaska
Posted on Nov 30, 2018 (14 days ago)
A tsunami warning has been put in place Friday near Alaska after an earthquake rocked the state's largest city by population, Anchorage. The preliminary magnitude of the seismic event was around 6.7, according to an early bulletin from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The U.S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter of the quake at about 7 miles north of Anchorage, according to reports. A CNN affiliate KTUU reported that they were "knocked off the air due to the earthquake." Anchorage boasts the largest population in Alaska by far, with some 300,000 residents, compared with some 33,000 in the state's capital in Juneau, according to the most recent census bureau statistics. Insurer Travelers Cos. Inc.'s stock was among the worst performers among the Dow Jones Industrial Average in Friday trade, down 1.2%, but it didn't move significantly after reports of the quake. Travelers's shares are down 4.9% this year, compared with a year-to-date gain of 2.4% for the Dow and a 2.5% climb so far this year for the S&P 500 index . Meanwhile, a popular fund used to bet on the property and casualty business, the Invesco KBW Property & Casualty Insurance ETF , was little changed on the session, up less than 0.1%.
Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio) was very active last quarter. According to Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B) latest 13F filing, the investment conglomerate spent approximately $12 billion last quarter buying shares for its investment portfolio. Financial stocks suffer broad selloff, pace Dow decliners
Posted on Nov 14, 2018 (30 days ago)
Financial stocks suffered broad declines Wednesday, weighed down by falling Treasury yields and worries about liabilities related to the California wildfires. The SPDR Financial Select Sector ETF dropped 2.4%, with all 67 equity components trading lower. The biggest decliner was Progressive Corp.'s stock , which tumbled 9.3%, although the insurer reported earlier net premiums written in October rose 18% from a year ago while net premiums earned increased 20%. Shares of fellow insurer Travelers Companies Inc. dropped 3.5% to pace the Dow Jones Industrial Average's decliners. The next biggest Dow losers were shares of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. , which shed 3.0% and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. , which fell 2.9%. Meanwhile, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note declined 4.4 basis points to 3.101%, despite a big jump in consumer inflation. Falling long-term yields could hurt bank profits, as the spread between what the bank earnings on longer-term assets and what it pays on shorter-term liabilities narrows.
