Employees use many tools to get their work done. Laptops and mobile apps are helpful, and this year they may need to plug into Facebook and Twitter. With the growing popularity of these social networks, it's inevitable that they will be used to connect with customers and to provide services that are essential to keep your business running smoothly.

An article this week from CIO.com, however, finds a recent survey showing  that more than half of CIOs in the United States do not allow employees to log onto social networking sites during the workday. It's a futile effort, says IDC analyst Caroline Dangson. Attempting to block workers from social networking sites is just not in the cards.

"This concept of trying to control or block [social media usage], it is not going to work," Dangson tells CIO.com. "There's going to be a divide, with some companies that shun public social networks and are fearful of using them, and some who embrace it and take the risk."

An IDC survey of 4,710 U.S. workers in October found that 34 percent use consumer social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn for business purposes, and 9 percent use microblogging sites like Twitter for business purposes.

But there is plenty of pushback from employers, according to Robert Half Technology. A survey of 1,400 CIOs from U.S. companies with at least 100 employees found that 54 percent completely prohibit use of social networking sites, such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, while at work.

The verdict may still be out for your business on the future of social media at the workplace. But the evidence is already showing that it's a positive development for the business world. And employers will have to start loosening up on how and when their workers can use it during the day.

• Prioritize. Put your to-do list in order, with the most important tasks at the top of the list. Knowing your priorities will help you focus more on what matters and less on what could wait until later.


• Be aware. Do your best to focus on one task at a time and be fully conscious in whatever you’re working on. The less distracted you are, the more you will be able to accomplish.

I saw a post on the User Interface Engineering blog about the 'Essence' of software program design. The key concept in thinking about the essence of a system is an understanding that a program is more than just processes and widgets. From the article:

Interaction with a product is more than how it’s used or how it behaves. It’s about a connection between two sides. One side is the customer, but the other side is much more than a product or service. To many people, the character and essence of a product and its company are identical. So, what is the essence of your product?

The post is in the context of software design but I think it also could certainly apply at a macro level to an organization or HR department, and I  suppose also at a micro level, to an individual's 'essence' of what they offer in the workplace. In HR Technology I think these concepts are especially important, as HR solutions typically impact the entire organization, not just the 'back-office' made up of power users.

So how can a designer of HR software, or an HR Technology professionals in an organization 'loosen up' and show a bit of humanity? 

Humor - Can you inject a bit of humor into the product, in the design, or in the user interface? If you can't or are not willing to really strive for humor, can you at least work towards a design that attempts to incorporate some fun into the experience? For powers users that spend the majority of their workday using the system, or for line managers that may only interact with the technology periodically, injecting
