Shares of CVS Health and Aetna rose Thursday on a report the Department of Justice won't challenge their merger. Drugstore chain and pharmacy benefits manager CVS announced in December it would acquire health insurer Aetna for $69 billion in a deal that could reshape the health industry. CVS shares were up 2.5 per cent to $69.03, while Aetna shares ticked higher to trade up 2.3 per cent at $191.82. The moves come after a report from trade publication Reorg Research, cited by Bloomberg, that said US antitrust enforcers might not challenge the deal. US Department of Justice staff are expected to voice their support in a recommendation to senior officials, Reorg Research reported, according to Bloomberg.

Investment in digital health companies continues its strong showing in 2018 with $3.4 billion raised in the first half of the year, according to data from Rock Health. If funding continues on this trajectory, Rock Health predicts that 2018 will surpass 2017's all-time high of $5.6 billion of investment. Amazon.com’s (AMZN) announcement yesterday that it would buy pharmacy startup PillPack has had quite an effect on the stocks of drug distributors and managed care, and the Street today is picking through the wreckage, arguing for a selective treatment of different parts of the industry. Shares of the pharmacy names were the hardest hit, with Rite Aid (RAD), for example, down 13% since Wednesday’s close, Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) down 10%, and CVS (CVS) down 7%. Names in the "pharmacy benefit management” and managed care market have been spared the worse, with Express Scripts (ESRX) down 1.6% since Wednesday and Aetna (AET) down 2.3%, and Cigna (CI) down just 1.3%.
